Angus MEI

BBA (Hons) in Finance and Banking (Year 2 Student)

I would like to explain why I chose to study at HSUHK. On the one hand, it is related to the course major. I hope to study a major related to finance or banking at university. On the other hand, I want to try a new learning environment, and English teaching in Hong Kong universities provides me with a great opportunity. Therefore, HSUHK has become my best choice.

After coming to Hong Kong, I encountered some difficulties which are very common for students from the mainland. Language is the first hurdle. Cantonese is the primary language in Hong Kong, while we always speak in Mandarin. Even though I have a certain foundation in Cantonese, there is still slight difference between local students’ Cantonese in Hong Kong. It seemed difficult for me to make new friends with local students at the beginning. Another difficulty is the English teaching environment. The completely different language teaching mode made my learning progress a little behind the normal pace. Sometimes I didn’t have enough time to take notes in class because I needed to concentrate on listening to what the teacher said.

However, these difficulties were solved rapidly and smoothly. The local students I meet are very friendly. They don’t care much about the gap between my Cantonese and theirs, but often patiently answer the questions that confuse me. My Cantonese has been “localized” a lot with their help after one-year “training”, and I have also built up a good friendship with them. As for the English teaching environment, the University also provides a lot of help to mainland students in this regard. For students whose English is not so good, the University often organizes activities to help students improve their English skills. In fact, teachers will try their best to deliver using simple and easy-to-understand English. If students don’t understand, they can consult the teacher after class. At the same time, pre-class preparation and some real-time translation software also help a lot.

As for campus life, studying at HSUHK is more interesting than what I imagined. Close teacher-student relationships allow me to communicate and exchange academic issues more explicitly with professors and even play badminton with them in my spare time. I joined the badminton U-team at HSUHK, and I made many new friends in this friendly and harmonious environment. With the help of my coach, there is significant progress in my skills through continuous training.  I am also honored to be selected as university representative in the Hong Kong University Badminton Competition – USFHK. I am very grateful to HSUHK for giving me a chance to meet high-level athletes from other universities in Hong Kong during this competition and compete with them. My horizon has been broadened through accumulating competition experience.

I look forward to meeting you at this wonderful university. I also hope that during the four years of study in university, I can graduate successfully and become a person with abundant knowledge and professional morality through my effort and with the help from HSUHK.
