As a third-year student in the Department of Chinese at HSUHK, it would be “rich” If I were to describe my experience studying here in a single word. Of course, this richness stems from personal choices; university life can be tranquil, or it can be abundant. However, the foundation for such a rich learning experience should be offered by the University. The University must present ample opportunities to you. In this regard, I believe HSUHK has done remarkably well.
When I first entered university as a freshman, I was confused in an unfamiliar environment. How to live was a question that every non-local student had to deal with. Life is not merely a straight line between two points; it should not be about retreating into one’s own world, but should seek out a space where they can breathe freely. This piece of air is not easily discovered, but HSUHK does not leave you to charge ahead like a bull. The diverse activities organised by the Residential Colleges and the campus itself are abundant. If one is willing, these activities can significantly help newcomers in exploring the lifestyle they aspire to for the next four years, leading them to find their own breath of fresh air.
There are so many “programs” at HSUHK you can participate in. For instance, I have participated in the Honours Academy and a student exchange program. The former is an organisation that provides additional resources and experiences throughout my four years of undergraduate study, greatly enriching my learning experience. The latter allows me to study at National Taiwan University for a semester, where I gained much experiences that I never had in Hong Kong. Joining these “programs” has made my time at HSUHK even more fruitful.
In terms of academic learning, my experience in the Department of Chinese at HSUHK has been truly delightful. Professors are always enthusiastic and tirelessly supportive, no matter in academic matters or personal life. The department frequently organises various lectures and activities, and shares information about relevant events organised by other institutions, which has allowed me to learn so many things I had never considered before.
The days spent studying at HSUHK will undoubtedly become a rich chapter in my life that I will fondly recall in the future. Richness does not solely refer to all the beautiful moments; the challenges and setbacks encountered along the way are also an indispensable part of this “rich” experience. I consider myself fortunate that, after nearly three years of study, I have discovered, amidst the ups and downs, the air in Hong Kong where I can breathe, preventing me from suffocating. This has made my “rich experiences” more beautiful.
